Born and bred in the Rhondda Valleys of Wales, Phil is a law graduate and lifelong student of military history.

A man with a somewhat colourful and notorious past, Phil’s life has swung wildly with shattering lows and ground-breaking highs. The contrast is well illustrated by his rugby career.

As a player in the late 70’s and early 80’s Phil’s violent conduct earned him the nickname “Ming the Merciless” and the threat of a life ban from the rugby authorities. Yet later, in an outstanding eleven-year off-field career he would hold some of the biggest jobs in Welsh and British rugby and be described as “one of the most talented, right-minded, marketing individuals in world sport”.

In May 2003 he left full-time rugby to establish Sporting Marvels, a Christian sports charity that works with thousands of young people in his beloved Rhondda Valleys.

As CEO, Phil dreams that his writing will lead to successful books (and films) and that he’ll be able to personally fund the work of Sporting Marvels and its sub-projects in East Africa.

He had the idea for Blood on Their Hands in late 2003. The book calls on his legal background and training, over ten years experience as a sports writer and three decade’s fascination with all things military. He is looking forward to seeing it become a bestseller.

Phil is happily married to Benita. They have five children and two grandchildren and continue to live in Rhondda.
